Cumaru
Scientific Name: Dipteryx Oleifera
Other Common and Commercial Names: Almendro, Brazilian Cumaru, Brazilian Teak, Brazilian Chestnut, Tonka.
Appearance: The wood exhibits a reddish chestnut to dark chestnut color with well-defined or golden brown and purplish streaks. The grain is straight to interlocked, and it features a low to medium gloss. Additionally, it has a distinctive fragrance.
Characteristics: Dipteryx Oleifera is an exceptionally dense wood with low linear shrinkage and moderately stable volumetric shrinkage. It boasts very high mechanical resistance, though sawing can be challenging due to its hardness and interlocked grain. Air drying is uniform and quick, while kiln drying is facilitated with a mild 10-day drying program. The wood is inherently resistant to decay, fungi, insect attacks, and does not require preservation.
Uses: Primarily employed in high-quality interior and exterior flooring and decking applications, Dipteryx Oleifera also serves the furniture industry effectively. Its premium quality makes it a preferred timber for post-and-beam construction as well as industrial construction projects.
